My Grandmother was a quiet gentle shy little lady, who was born in Barry, Wales to a Welsh mum and first generation Australian Irishman during WW1.

You could always rely on Nan being at home with her apron on baking something, peeling the vegetables for dinner, cleaning the house, talk show radio on or doing the daily crosswords. The kettle was always on the boil for another cup of tea. She was a beautiful cook, the food was simple and wholesome, always fresh ingredients.

When all the chores were done, by about 1pm she would pull out her spinning wheel, her sewing machine, her knitting, her crocheting…whatever she was working on and spend the afternoon in heaven.

Come about 4pm she would disappear into the bathroom, comb her hair and put her lipstick on….Pa would be home soon….
